| Name: Simon Tam Age/Date of Birth: Nov 30 2490 Sexuality: Straight Housing: 1610 with River Prospective Job: Doctor SHIELD: Probably not, he's not fond of working for government agencies especially secret ones after what happened with River back in their world Fandom: Firefly Medium: TV Canon point: Post Serenity Arrival Date: Just after acceptance (provided when it is) PB: Sean Maher Personality: Simon is intelligent and hard working. While not as intelligent as River who is exceptionally gifted he isn't lacking in that area. He worked hard all of his life to become a doctor something he dreamed of and ended up achieving that much to his delight. He also completed his training quickly, just showing how dedicated and intelligent he actually is. He isn't just book smart though. Perhaps not at first but he quickly learned how to become so when he had to first rescue his sister and then on Serenity just to survive the jobs that he went on. Simon has a strong sense of loyalty to those who are close to him. First and foremost it is his sister River, who he will do anything to protect. Otherwise he is loyal to himself, his beliefs and later on he is somewhat loyal to the crew of Serenity. Depending on the situation he will have his allegiance changed. He used to be at one point loyal to the Alliance but after he had to rescue River, it was to her and himself. Slowly he is starting to branch out though and starting to trust Kaylee and the others but he still doesn't completely trust them and perhaps never will. He isn't one to back down from arguments or from doing what he believes is right, especially when his sister is involved. While he isn't violent and prefers to discuss things he can come up with a good argument and isn't afraid of voicing his opinions even when they aren't popular. He believes that you have an opinion and it doesn't matter if it is different to other peoples. Simon isn't great with people despite being a doctor. He always means well but sometimes he just doesn't succeed at that. Still his heart is in the right place and he tries which is the main thing. Growing up on a core planet he was raised to be incredibly polite and that is something that he has kept despite his adventures on Serenity and falling in with the 'wrong' crowd so to speak. He's polite and has expectations that come from growing up on a core planet that sometimes come off as making him arrogant. He doesn't mean to, it's just the way that he is. As time has passed he has become less so but it is still very much there as part of his personality. History: Simon Tam was the oldest child born to Regan and Gabriel Tam in 2490 on the planet Osiris with his sister River being born ten years later. As a child growing up on a centre world, he and his family and strong ties and belief in the Alliance. This could be because he was only young when the war started he might have not considered fighting for the other side at all, easily swayed by their propaganda due to his age. Growing up, Simon was always incredibly talented when it came to his school work and continually was in the top few percent of his class when it came to graduation. Despite their age difference, he and his sister were always close. She was a genius and even form a young age she would often be found correcting his school work. At first he found it annoying but he came to like it - especially when it turned out she was right in her corrections. After graduating from school, he entered MecAcad to train to become a doctor. Finishing his training in the top three percent of his class he went on to do his residency which he completed in eight months compared to the usual year that it would take. This allowed him to actually practice medicine. After he and his fellow students officially became students, they drank a lot of Sake and ended up naked on the statue of Hippocrates. He somehow managed to convince the Alliance from telling his father - he isn't quite sure how due to the amount he had to drink. While he is working as a surgeon, Simon stayed in contact with River who was attending an elite academy. During this time he became concerned for her due to the amount of errors in her letters to him which he later concluded was a code asking him to rescue her. For two years he worked on rescuing her and eventually managed to do so by posing as an elite Alliance member - though he originally told Mal and the crew of the Serenity a different story as he didn't trust them at the time. Unfortunately after learning of his rescue of River, the Alliance put out a warrant for their arrests and freezes all of their money leaving them poor and on the run. It was on Persephone that they would encounter Kaylee who managed to convince them to board Serenity - though to her it was just Simon and his luggage, not knowing that River was actually frozen asleep in the box. His time on Serenity doesn't start out well as it is soon discovered they have an undercover agent aboard. At first they believe it to be Simon but it turns out to be another passenger. Unfortunately during this the agent shoots Kaylee in the stomach and Simon is the only one to be able to save her. He uses this to convince Mal to allow him and River to stay onboard and not be turned over to the Alliance. As it turns out he has to stay on the move, Mal offers him the position of Medic aboard the Serenity which he accepts. During his time on board, he and Mal often came to blows due to their similar personalities and goals in life. While they both wanted to protect their family (Mal his crew, Simon with River) they didn't always line up together despite being on the same ship. Over time though the two of them came to work with each other and have some sort of respect. Mal isn't the only member he came to blows with on the ship. Jayne is also one that doesn't like having them on Serenity. In fact, after River attacks him with a knife in one of her not so lucid moments he tries to turn them over to the Alliance and collect the award. Most of the time he spent trying to make sure River behaves to the point he didn't really form any friendships or relationships with others on the ship. Unfortunately, this meant that he often insulted them without meaning to, such as when he referred to Serenity as a piece of garbage while talking to Kaylee. It was after this that he realised that River had disappeared. He eventually found her dancing with the locals. Unfortunately he is then kidnapped by some people who live in the hills who are in desperate need of a doctor. While this starts out alright (even if he wasn't alright at being kidnapped and not just asked to come and help them), things go downhill once River is accused of being a witch due to her unusual powers of knowing things without being told. Simon was ready to die alongside her but Mal and Zoe rescue her before that happens. That signified a change in his relationship with Mal. When asked why he rescued the Tam's Mal responds that they are members of his crew so why wouldn't he rescue them? During a job in Canton, Simon pretends to be a high class buying of clay to pull it off. It was there that they realised that Jayne is practically worshipped much to their amusement. This also lead to a change with his relationship with Kaylee. Both were drunk in the pub where he admitted that he found her quite pretty - especially covered in engine grease. Unfortunately when the two are awoken by Mal in the morning, Simon denies anything happened in the process hurting Kaylee. He later apologises and says that is his way of showing respect and affection to others. That wasn't the last time he would hurt her either when trying to be nice to her. He would later say something that would lead her to believe that he only liked her because there was no one else on Serenity even if that wasn't what he meant. While on the core planet, Ariel he comes up with a plan to steal medicine from a hospital there to sell on the black market. While there, he uses the neural scanners to discover River's amygdala has been stripped allowing her to feel all emotion and not being able to push any aside. While there, River predicts that a doctor will make a mistake and kill a man which leads to Simon intervening and managing to save the man's life. It was after this that Jayne tried to turn them over to the Alliance but thankfully it didn't work. Not long after that, Simon has started to loosen up and relax around the rest of the team, especially Kaylee. Despite how much he is enjoying his life on Serenity he does admit that he does miss his old life and if it wasn't for what they did to River he would still be there. When Mal decided to take River along on a bank robbery, he protested loudly but in the end she ended up going along. Perhaps it was a good thing as she was able to warn them of the Reavers that approached the planet to attack them. While they manage to escape, Simon decides that he and River will leave the Serenity at the next port they land at. Except they don't. At the port, they were in a bar a tv commercial causes River to attack the patrons though Simon managed to stop her by shouting out a safe word that ends up sending her to sleep. Instead of just leaving them there, Simon and his sister continued to travel onboard Serenity to the planet Miranda that River seems to know something about, something she shouldn't know about. Simon and the rest of Serenity Crew escape from Miranda which has been devastated by the Alliance and a drug that accidentally created the Reavers. Facing a hopeless battle against them, he admits to Kaylee that he would like to become involved with her. While the Battle doesn't go well, they eventually win thanks to Mal and River. After returning to the ship he and Kaylee finally consummate their relationship. Special abilities: Incredibly intelligent, gifted surgeon Third-person sample: If there was one thing that Simon hated after everything that happened was secret government agencies. Who could really blame him though after what happened to River? So when he turned up in one on what was supposedly Earth, he was immediately suspicious. He set out to lie to them, to get out of there but he was moved into a room where he was interrogated by someone who seemingly was able to read his mind. After River he was somewhat used to it but nonetheless it was slightly uncomfortable having all of his secrets out on the open like that. He also had no idea what to think about him supposedly coming from a television show. Or the fact that River was here. At least she was safe and no longer alone but he would prefer her to be on Serenity with the others, despite the problems he had with them over the past year. They would keep her safe - though Jayne was debatable the others would which was the important thing. He really didn't like that man, especially for how he treated River. Finally he came to accept they were telling the truth, as far as they knew it anyway. He would settle down, talk to River who seemed to always know something that she shouldn't about the situation and see what he could do about returning them home. |
