Concept: A normal run of the mill girl from Melbourne who ended up with quite a fright when she discovered her powers.

Power: MEDIUMSHIP: Maria has the ability to communicate with the dead as well as see them all over.

Maria doesn't know the full extent of her powers as it is quite a recent discovery but from what she can tell so far is that she has the ability to see and communicate with the dead, especially with those that left the world unexpectedly via accident or murder or those that need to have a message passed on to someone still in the living world. She seems them and talks to them just like she would any other person, except for the fact others can't see them so it often looks like she's talking to herself. Ghosts, she has discovered while they look solid they have a slightly hazy/faded look about them, like she's seeing them out of the corner of her eye on a fuzzy television screen.

At the moment Maria can only talk to them for up to five minutes at a time before she looses concentration and there is the fact that she can't do it with anyone else around which sometimes complicate matters depending on how determined the ghost is to make contact and if it's an angry ghost.

How old were they when the power manifested? 16

How did their government become aware of their power?: Upon discovering her powers, Maria registered with the Government as it was required of her.

Personality: Maria is a quiet, friendly person who tries to be nice to everyone - there’s no point in discriminating against other people especially as now they had discovered their powers, none of them were normal as it was. Even before she became a VOL, Maria was the type to not say a bad word about someone for the most part, as a human she did gossip but only with a select few people after all she needed to vent to someone about the people who annoyed her, she wasn’t perfect after all.

Maria wasn't the smartest, the prettiest or the most popular kid at school, in fact she was fairly average for the most part at just about everything never standing out in one way or another except when it came to art, something she always excelled at. It was her biggest passion and something she always put 200% into when she had something to do with it.

Despite her touch of rebellion after her seventh year where she somewhat fell into the popular crowd and started to party, Maria isn't big on that sort of thing she'd much prefer to have a movie and pizza night with a close group of friends. She has always gotten on well with people despite their age or gender though she only has a small group of people she'd call close friends, she doesn't want to be popular she's just happy how she is.

That isn't to say that Maria is perfect, far from it in fact. One of her biggest flaws is that she can hold a grudge like nothing else, despite living with her father and seeing her mother on weekends she has never forgiven them for divorcing though as she grew older she started to see how incompatible they were as a couple. She has grown to accept it over time but it still hurts a lot, especially when she sees people with a happy family that is all together.

She's dedicated and hardworking, she'll try and see things through to the end and will work her backside off if necessary but for the most part she is happy to coast along doing what she can without putting to much effort into it. Of course coming up to major assessments she will but she also knows if she works to hard she can come down sick and ruin everything - better to do it in smaller, safer amounts than over do herself.

Maria is sensible and reliable, by the time she was fourteen her parents had no problem leaving her home alone or letting her go out by herself knowing that she'd call them or let them know somehow if something changed, she isn't one to go out at a whim and get drunk etc. If she did plan on drinking - not that she legally could at her age - she would inform her parents, make plans to be picked up and dropped off and so forth. It isn't just this but if she says she'll do something she will and so forth.

Family members & loved ones: Mother - Josephine Johansson | 45 | Real Estate Agent
Father - Patrick Johansson | 50 | Lawyer

History: Maria Johansson was born an hour from Melbourne down on the edge of the Mornington Peninsula. As an only child to Patrick and Josephine Johansson, Maria grew up slightly spoiled, often getting what she wanted. Despite that, she knew what it was like at times to go without something. Both of her parents worked for nearly her entire childhood, so she was often left with babysitters who were much more demanding of her and less likely to give her the things that she wanted. All in all, this leveled out her parents behaviour so in the end she grew up well.

Attending the local primary school, Maria enjoyed her classes and made a couple of good friends though she did like to believe the best of everyone, which as she grew older would sometimes come back to bite her as they started to use her for their own ends.

It was there that she met Nicole, who would quickly go on to become her best friend, the two of them remaining incredibly close even today.

While at first everything seemed perfect for Maria, as she started High School her parents marriage started to dissolve. For the majority of her first year at high school, her home life was just argument after argument and combined with moving to a new school along with all the other pressures of being a teenager, Maria found that she was hating life at that particular moment.

At the end of her seventh year, her parents informed her that they were getting a divorce. She would spend the week with her dad, who moved to St Kilda and the weekends with her mother who stayed in Seaford where the family had originally lived.

Devastated as Maria had no desire to leave her friends or the life that she knew did the only thing she could think of and started to rebel against her parents. It wasn't all that extreme but she started to party, fall into the 'popular' crowd and started to drink as well as staying out later than she was supposed to much to her parents exasperation.

Of course this didn't last all that long as Maria and her father moved half way through the summer holidays which meant starting over again. For the rest of the holidays, Maria spent most of her time by herself exploring St Kilda - during the day, there was no way she would be allowed out at night, or talking and spending time with Nicole.

Her father enrolled her in Shelford Girls' Grammar School in Caufield, the next suburb over from them. While at first, Maria wasn't a big fan of the school, especially coming in when she did, she soon settled in and made a couple of friends.

It was here that Maria discovered her passion for art and drawing and would spend a lot of her free time in and around the parks of Melbourne sketching the landscapes that she could see. At school, she also did quite well at her subjects, the teachers pushing her up and beyond her normal standard, determined that she do the absolute best that she could.

At the age of sixteen though her life changed forever. Like everyone else she had heard of the VOLs and while she thought it might be awesome to have a super power she never thought it would become reality. She had been visiting her grandparents when her grandmother had a heart attack and passed away, she was old it wasn't all that much of a surprise but the biggest surprise was when Maria saw her grandmother's ghost appear in front of her resulting in a near animilistic scream from her.

She froze and had no idea what was happening, all she could say was "Nana, Nana, Nana" over and over again before running from the house absolutely terrified. From there she made her way to the Graveyard, not sure why exactly but her gut feeling was that she needed to go there. It was here that she started to calm down and fully begin to understand what was happening to her. She was a VOL and she could see and hear ghosts, she slowly started to try talking to them and they spoke back, it wasn't surprising that it creeped her out but she soon calmed down enough to think rationally. From there she made her way home, informed her father who was of disbelief at first but soon came to accept it and registered with the Government. That was five months ago and now she is off to IVI and while she is slightly hesitant about leaving her father she is looking forward to it nonetheless.

Powers narrative:

Maria’s grandmother had been ill for quite some time so it came as no shock when they realised that she had passed away, the biggest shock was that they were a witness to it. Maria and her father had headed down to her house in Rosebud where she had lived for the past forty years. Maria had always adore her grandmother, she was the one she would turn to at first after her parents had divorced, when she wanted something normal in her life after the move. Even today she was the person she would turn to for advice on matters or even just to have a cup of tea and biscuit with.

Jane, her Nana, had gone into the kitchen to make them a pot of tea when she and her father heard a sudden crash coming from the direction. Running into the kitchen they discovered Jane on the floor, the tea set smashed around her and she wasn’t breathing. Maria didn’t know what was happening, she barely noticed her father call the ambulance all she could focus on was the hazy area around her Nana and the shock that she could very well be dead.

As she stood there she thought she saw her Nana raise from the ground and was about to say something to her father when she saw her Nana’s body still on the ground. “Maria, sweetie,” she heard her grandmother’s... spirit? ghost? she wasn’t sure what it was but it definitely wasn’t her. She didn’t even realise she was chanting “Nana” over and over again, she was in so much shock. “I love you and I’ll miss you,” she said before drifting out of the house.

Screaming like a banshee, Maria ran from the house as fast as she could, she had no idea where she was going but soon found herself in the graveyard which was full of those ghostly, shadowy people. Collapsing on the ground she sobbed and sobbed for ages before she found she could cry no more. She stayed where she was though, not moving, just watching the ghostly people move around the graves and through objects. As she took deep calming breaths her brain started to process what was happening and while at first she didn’t want to believe it she soon came to the conclusion she was a VOL and could see and at least hear dead people.
