PERSONALITY
Maria Hill, despite what many people think of her has many layers to her personality - she just doesn't show them to people. The first thing that many people notice about her is that she's incredibly by the book and does what is right, even if it might not be the best thing to do in a particular situation. During her childhood, she watched her father get away with a lot of things he shouldn't have, something she continually prayed that would stop but it never did. To her, it was a failure of justice, a failure of the law and that is something she doesn't want anyone else to experience. To a lot of people, this is rather off-putting and they often believe she should 'relax and go with the flow' but to her, that often just leads to trouble for her and anyone else involved. That isn't to say, she agrees with all of the rules, but she knows that they are there for a reason and should be followed.
Another thing that Maria firmly believes in, is not showing anyone her emotions. It has taken years of practice while growing up but she has now perfected hiding them behind the mask that she constantly wears. Only a small handful of people have ever glimpsed the person behind it - mostly Coulson and Fury and even then it is sometimes too many in her opinion. Due to her father's habit of abusing her both mentally and physically, she learned early on that it was best not to show any reaction to what he said to her - it only made him angrier. That was the beginning of the mask, that she still hides behind today.
Despite that, she firmly believes in speaking her mind when she believes that something isn't right. Yes, she is incredibly loyal to Fury and SHIELD but she isn't unquestionably loyal. In fact, Fury is well of the temper that she has hidden underneath all of the layers of her personality. She is always incredibly careful of who she speaks up against and, truly it is only Fury - her direct superior that she does so but if she doesn't agree with something she will tell him. She might not raise her voice but she will make her displeasure known - yelling never accomplishes things after all. When Maria loses her temper her demeanour gets even calmer and icier than it already is - which might seem surprising given she is known as the 'Ice Queen' around SHIELD.
While she might be loyal to SHIELD and Fury, she detests people who turn their back on them. It is one reason, why she was willing to go rogue with Cap and Falcon - because they needed to save SHIELD, to protect Fury and bring down those who decided to betray the one thing that Maria trusted - or came close to trusting in her life. SHIELD was what has kept her going over the years and the thought of people betraying it made her blood boil.
Maria hates failing with a passion. Growing up, she was always told she was worthless and a waste of space, so she made it her mission not to be that. She strives to be the absolute best and when it comes down to it she is the best. While she knows that she might not be on the same level as Fury (she likes to think she is though), she hopes one day that she would be capable of becoming the Director of SHIELD, despite recent events.
To say that Hill is a workaholic would be an understatement. Given her lack of emotional attachment to pretty much anyone as well as her desire to be the best, it isn't all that surprising that she dedicates herself completely to her work. She'll be the first one in, the last one out (if she does leave) and will always go above and beyond what is expected of her. To her though, it isn't enough and she will continually push herself to do better than she already is. Most of all she believes it is up to her, her duty to do what is expected of her. In fact, to her SHIELD is her life and her home and it is her duty to work for it and to help them protect Earth from whatever is out there.
Because she is such a 'by the book person' she can be seen as rather cruel at times - because she does take that extra step to do what is needed when other people might not. It's why she followed Steve's order to plow up the Hellicarriers while he was still on board, because it was the right thing to do. To destroy one life while saving millions of others. That is the sort of decision she has to make and she isn't afraid to make it and she won't be losing any sleep over it either.
In relation to this, Hill can be rather blunt at times - often saying things with no regard to what people think if it is the truth. On the opposite end of things though she is excellent at keeping secrets, something she has always been. From a young age, she learned it was best not to talk about certain things and this is a skill that has proved incredibly useful over the years, working at SHIELD.
Something, that most people wouldn't expect of her is that she does have a softer side to her - not that she ever really indulges in it. If she had the choice of rescuing an animal or not she probably would rescue it, though she knows logically she doesn't have the time to take care of a pet (she would ensure it received a suitable home though). She also has an incredible sweet tooth, which is one of her well-guarded secrets (along with her entire childhood truthfully) but her favourites are anything with mint in them - or strawberry for that matter.
One of the things she respects the most in people though is the ability to make the hard decisions and do what is right for the world. If she has true friends, they would be few and far between but would truly be Coulson, Hand and May (and now Pepper) - four people who are in many ways like her, especially the last two. The fastest way to annoy her is to be the type of person who follows orders without at least thinking about them, to just take whatever comes at you and be silly, always getting into trouble. There's a reason Stark annoys her so much - besides his giant ego that is.
While she is dedicated and ambitious, Maria also has the intelligence to back it up. She's logically but can also make intuitive leaps which has helped her and SHIELD get out of many a situation - especially when she was a Field Agent when she first joined SHIELD.
Maria, hates dwelling on the past, on things that could have been. One of the more major ways that she does that is by staying busy, by burying herself in her work even more so. In the end, it is a never ending cycle.
On the rare occasion that Maria has time to relax (she is the type of person to take her work home with her after all), she enjoys a good relaxing bath, a glass of wine and a good book. Or a trashy romantic movie, something she is well aware most people wouldn't expect of her. She's always been a bit of a bookworm though and has quite an impressive collection of books that she has gathered over the years, something she plans to continue now that she has slightly more time on her hands, working for Stark.
When it comes to intimate relationships though, Maria has sworn them off. She will have a handful of friends but she can never see herself in a romantic one. When it comes down to it she's scared of how any partner would treat her. While her parent's marriage was a good one before she was born and her mother died, what her father did to her left many mental scars on her. That isn't to say she is a virgin though, she isn't concerned about which gender the person is but she's found it is a good way to relieve stress and frustration though it isn't something she does all that often - only when things get really bad.
HISTORY
Maria was born on an incredibly cold April night to her parents, a happy couple. Unfortunately, her birth spelled the end of that happiness for them though with the death of her mother due to complications during the birth. From then on her father turned to drink and would often drink to hide from his grief at the loss of his wife. Even from the moment, she was born, he blamed Maria for his wife's death and didn't hide his hatred for her.
Due to this, Maria didn't have a happy childhood and learned too soon stay out of the way of her father, especially when he had been drinking. He had no problems with telling her that everything that went wrong was her fault and that he wished she was dead. At first, Maria didn't understand why but knew it was a constant for as long as she could remember. By the time she was six though and started school, she realised that her family life wasn't normal and then soon realised that it had to do with the death of her mother who she had been aware had died in childbirth for awhile now.
In an effort to avoid her father, Maria spent a lot of time at the local library reading and studying as much as she could, only coming home when the library closed. By the time she entered her teenage years, Maria was essentially independent of her father doing the cooking, cleaning and nearly everything else that had to be done. Mostly, as they wouldn't get done otherwise.
As soon as she could, Maria got a couple of part-time jobs in an effort to earn as much money as she could from mowing lawns of her neighbours to working at MacDonalds as a check out chick - she hated it but it was money, her favourite was the tutoring she did of younger children mostly because it paid her the most.
After leaving school, Maria considered going to College but decided against it and instead joined the Marines. She spent the first couple of years training, but was soon deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq to participate in the 'war against terror'. The next couple of years, she saw some of the worst things in her life, things that made her question the sanity of the human race. By the time she left the Marines in early 2004, she had hardened herself even further against the horrors of humanity. She had stuck out much longer than some of the other females had, the Marines were very much a men's only group but she had refused to give into their behaviour and prove them that she was weak and couldn't stand up for herself. July 22, 2004, was a defining moment in her life though. It had been a routine mission... Until it had gone wrong. Maria ended up with two broken legs, broken ribs and a concussion as well as burns to 30% of her body and an honorable discharge from the Military.
After being sent home, she spent the next few months in physical therapy where she pushed herself above and beyond what was expected of her it. It was two months to the day of the incident that he life changed again when Agent Coulson approached her about joining SHIELD. At first she was suspicious but in the end, he won her over. SHIELD had noticed her back in the Marines and had kept an eye on her during the years due to her willingness to go into situations that others wouldn't but also her determination to protect those around her. The ability to desensitize herself to the horrors around her certainly appealed to them too.
When she was well enough, she joined SHIELD while keeping up with the last parts of her physical therapy. At first, it was hard on her but she refused to give in. She pushed herself to the point of exhaustion more than once and in fact, she got used to waking up in the SHIELD infirmary after collapsing while training much to the frustration of her teachers. Maria refused to give up though and in the end, it made her into the person she was today. Her ability not to give up meant she regained full use of her legs and right arm and ended up graduating in the top 2% of her Academy Class.
From there, she quickly rose through the ranks of SHIELD agents, proving herself to be extremely capable. For her first few missions, she worked under Coulson but also during that time, some of the other best that SHIELD had to offer including Sitwell and Hand. Before she knew it, she was taking rookie Agents out into the field herself. That was until 2009 when a mission went wrong and they received incorrect information from a source. It should have been straight in and out mission but in the end, she barely came out of it alive and the rest of the group of Agents that she was leading wasn't as lucky as her.
After that, she spent the next six months assigned to desk work after she was released from the hospital and never looked back. After that mission, she was promoted to Level 8 and worked under Hand in the Operations Department. There, Maria proved herself even further as someone who could plan things down to the last detail as well as not let other people's opinion sway her. In fact, it was during this time that Fury began to notice her and her ability not to give a shit about what anyone thought of her as well as her ability to do the paperwork to a standard higher than most. To him, that was a miracle, most Agents hated paperwork but she was at least willing to do it. It wasn't long until she was promoted once again, this time to Level 9.
While she enjoyed her work as Hand's second in command, she found herself wanting to challenge herself even further which was something her superiors noticed about her. Two weeks after attaining level 9, she found herself in charge of The Hub, working alongside Hand, something she enjoyed doing and found that she was natural at. She had always enjoyed organising people and things and this was something she could put her skills to use and the fact that she only answered to a couple of other people above her pleased her too. She had finally proved herself to the world, that she wasn't useless and could actually do something she wished too.
Eight months later though, Fury's second in charge retired after being diagnosed with an inoperational brain tumor and to her surprise, he selected her to take their spot as the Deputy Director of SHIELD. She knew that a lot of people weren't happy with her appointment, there had been people in senior roles, in SHIELD much longer than she had - she had only been a member for just over six years and no matter how much she proved herself there would be people who didn't like it. So, Maria took it upon herself to change their minds, to prove to them that she was the best person for the job and with a lot of them she did just that.
During the latest attack on New York, while it turned out alright she hadn't been a fan of the plan to introduce the Avengers knowing they wouldn't work well together. With the death of Coulson though, while she was shaken as he had always been a constant around SHIELD she was slightly relieved to see them working together.
After the battle was over, she helped in the clean up of New York as well as organising and directing the cleanup crews. After the Battle, she continued to work for SHIELD, mostly in the running of it but she also took over Coulson's job in managing the Avengers much to her distaste. While they did prove themselves during the Battle, she didn't like the majority of them - especially Stark, though she did at least appreciate what he did with the Nuke. Saved her a hell of a headache. When Fury discovered that HYDRA had infiltrated SHIELD she didn't believe him at first, she couldn't. Despite that she knew that Fury wouldn't lie to her - keep secrets yes, but never lie and especially about something this big. The two of them worked on a plan to bring HYDRA down but it all came to a head when the Winter Soldier appeared and tried to kill but Rogers and Fury. They had planned for this and Maria, helped Fury fake his death. She knew it was for the best that SHIELD believed that Fury was dead as they had no idea who were HYRDA and who were loyal to them. A part of her hadn't like the plan though she didn't voice it, she knew it would draw the traitors out and that was what needed to happen.
Thankfully, Rogers had been joined by the Black Widow in his effort to discover what was happening and Hill had faith in the two of them. She knew those two wouldn't betray SHIELD, not after everything they had done for them. Plus Rogers had already taken down HYDRA once before, he would never join them. Disguised as one of the Strike Team, sent to arrest Rogers and Romanoff, she helped them escape back to the safe house where Fury was. From there the four of them developed a plan to take down SHIELD. While Hill didn't like the thought of destroying SHIELD, she had to admit that Rogers was right, it was the only way to do it.
When it came to destroying the Hellicarrier's, she had felt sick at the thought of killing Rogers though he was right, she had to fire then. While she usually didn't care what other people thought, she knew they would persecute her for killing him and a small part of her didn't want to kill someone who was still incredibly loyal to them - plus she had started to consider him as close to a friend as she could. More along the lines of what Barton and Romanoff were too her. Trusted Agents who she would trust to do what was necessary no matter what - it was why they were doing this and not any other Agents. Despite that, she was relieved to find that he had somehow survived the destruction of them.
After the fall and the secrets of SHIELD were leaked she knew that they would be persecuted and it wasn't long until the summons came. During that time, she realised that the only way to protect herself from going to jail, especially as the former Deputy Director, she had a lot of sway in everything that happened, she decided to join Stark Industries. Sometimes, even now she wonders why she did so but she knew it was for the best, not even the Government would touch Stark. She was at least grateful that Potts was there to keep Stark under control or she probably would have ended up killing him. Plus, he also had the resources that she needed to find and eliminate the rest of the HYDRA members of SHIELD before rebuilding SHIELD, better and more secure than it was before.
Since start work for Pepper, Maria helped Melinda track down the truth of what happened to Phil, infiltrated Providence with Talbot in an effort to stop Coulson and his team being arrested and sent to Prison, begged him to come work for Stark and swear off SHIELD and assembled the Avengers to have them attack a HYDRA Research Base where they captured both Loki's Scepter and Baron Wolfgang von Strucker
