Hogwarts
At Hogwarts, unlike most of his family, Elph was sorted into Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin. Thankfully his family was alright with that. It was here in Ravenclaw that he started to shape who he would become in the future. He spent a lot of time studying just about anything he could get his hands on but also talking to a lot of people. He had always questioned why they believed what they did and he found that a lot of what his family sprouted couldn't hold up in front of the facts that he was discovering.

By the time he left Hogwarts, while he didn't want anything to do with the Muggle world he had no problem with people of Muggle heritage as long as they tried to fit into the Wizarding World. Magic was magic and it didn't matter who welded it as long as they welded it well and did good things with it. Becoming Prefect and Head Boy also helped with this revelation. He knew better than to speak to it to his family though and instead just slowly drifted away from him.

Becoming an Auror
Elph had known he wanted to be an Auror from the moment he entered Hogwarts and to his delight he managed to do so. He did well as an Auror and rose through the ranks fairly steadily. He also gained a bit of a reputation as someone who was actually happy and enjoyed doing paperwork which helped too. He actively participated in the war against Grindewald, fighting with Albus on the Continent but upon his return he found settling in again fairly easy. The war wasn't for him, he preferred desk work he quickly found.

A year after his return, he found himself promoted to Head of the Auror Office. He loved the challenged it brought to him and he found he was a natural at it. He worked hard, tried to be fair to everyone and generallly do a good job.

Elph must have done something right as in 1953 he was promoted to Head of the DMLE where he stayed until 1970 when he retired due to the war heating up. He decided that due to his age the DMLE was better off having someone younger lead them through the war.

Retirement from the DMLE
Just become Elph had retired from the DMLE it didn't mean he was completley disconnected from what was going on. He took duelling lessons, was a member of the Wizengamont and paid frequent visits to the DMLE and Ministry in general to keep up with what was happening. He'd been working there for fifty-five years and it was very hard to give it up.

During that time he wrote a number of books on duelling and Defense as well as tips and tricks for the Auror Office and DMLE in general. In his down time he did pick up gardening though.

Estrangement of his family
While it started at Hogwarts, by the time he was thirty he was barely talking to his siblings and parents. He would put on a front for the public if need be but he would go out of his way to avoid them and societal functions that would require him to interact. The more time he spent away from them the different his views on Blood Purity and Magic became. He just couldn't understand where the others were coming from. A Muggleborn that was in his year even explained to him about genetics and inbreeding and that was the time he swore off marrying a Pureblood from the United Kingdom.

He just couldn't risk it.

He thought it explained the decrease in children as well as the loss of power that they were seeing over the generations he has no proof. Not that any would truly listen to him as the prejudice is so ingrained within their society.

To this day he might see them once or twice a year and when he does the situation is always tense.

questions

Please answer the following in first person, in character. These should be answered truthfully and not as a "politically correct" answer that your character might give publicly. Treat this as a way for us to understand where your character fits into the rebuilding of the wizarding world since Voldemort's defeat this past January.

Are you involved in politics? Why or why not?
I am. I was involved with the DMLE for fifty-five years first as an Auror before moving up to be head of the DMLE. I retired due to the fact that I thought they needed a younger leader as the war heated up but that didn't mean I stepped down completely. I helped teach duelling, I wrote books for them to use. I have also got a position on the Wizengamont as the oldest remaining member of the Urquart family. I believe it is important to be active in Politics, especially in this day and age. We need to set a good exmaple for future generations as well as ensuring that everyone is treated fairly. No one no matter who they are should get away with breaking the law but at the same time the consequences must suit the crime.

How important is someone's blood status to you?
Growing up as a child I was taught that blood mattered. At Hogwarts, being sorted into Ravenclaw is perhaps what began to change me. It was there that I met Halfbloods and Muggleborns that would challenge me both with magical power and their intelligence. I watched them, studied them and read as much as I could and my opinion quickly changed. I also found out someone who I assumed was a Pureblood with the last name of Smith turned out to be Muggleborn which made me question things further. In the end I decided that as long as they are Magical and don't try to flout their Muggle heritage and try to learn our Wizarding traditions that is what matter. Respect is the most important thing.

During the war, which side did you support? How public was your support?
First and foremost I supported the Ministry. I wasn't aware of the Order of the Phoenix though I do support their ideals the way they went about it is completely wrong. Not only were they breaking the law they would have gotten in the way of the DMLE from doing their job properly, they could easily have endanged innocent lives.

Now I'm not saying that the Ministry is perfect, far from it. Having worked in it for so long I'm well aware of many of it's failings, same as the Wizengamont. I personally think that if they had everyone's support it would be a lot harder for corruption to happen. Instead we are forced to focus on those working against the Ministry on both sides and not just the Death Eaters who caused so many problems for us all over the past decade.

Have any of your relatives or friends died or been injured during the war? How has this affected you?
Has anyone not been effected? My brother Eddard was killed during the earlier years of the war as was his wife and two daughters. He has a surviving grandson though. My brother Narcissus is alive and well though his wife was killed. Their son was bitten by a werewolf and cast out at some point. I believe their daughter is alive and well.

I don't have much contact with any of them regardless.

A number of my friends and co-workers were killed or lost family members. It hurts but we have to move on and make the world a better place for everyone who survives to this day, to ensure future generations are safe.

Recently, the Daily Prophet released confidential documents proving the existence of a vigilante group of individuals, including well-known aurors Frank & Alice Longbottom, the late Alastor Moody, and deceased hitwizards Fabian & Gideon Prewett, formed to oppose You-Know-Who and operating outside of the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Magic. How do you feel about these individuals taking the law into their own hands?
I don't support it especially those who worked outside of the Ministry. I'm not against people defending themselves but forming a vigalnte group to fight agains them was reckless and could have done some serious damange to the community especially if innocnents got in the way. I'm not saying they were wrong to defend themselves and others but it would have been better to work with the DMLE to form patrol groups of Aurors, Hitwizards and other specifically trained individuals working with the DMLE instead of against them.

Where do you stand on the arrest and possibly incarceration of individuals for their war crimes? This includes members of the Order of the Phoenix and the Death Eaters.
I believe that if they broke the law they should be punished. Incarceration? It depends on what exactly their crime is. There are other options such as community service that might be fitting for the crimes. Death Eaters? They deserve incarceration, the Order I'm not so sure about. They meant well and that needs to be taken into consideration.

What is your opinion on the use of Azkaban Prison and its guards, the dementors?
The prison itself is fine. Dementors are disgusting creatures and no one desreves to be inflicted upon them. If they have to be anywhere though I would prefer them to be in Azkaban though so they don't harm the rest of the citizens of the Wizarding World

What do you see as the most important thing for British wizarding society to do now that You-Know-Who has been defeated?
Rebuild, move on with our lives and remember the dead. Remember what happened so we can avoid a repeat of it again. We would never survive it if it did.
