GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Millicent was always tall for her time and she learned how to use that to her advantage. Growing up, she was taught how to behave properly and speak without her Scottish accent so by the time that she graduated from Hogwarts she had a received pronunciation way of speaking, something she has retained to this day though when annoyed she will slip back slightly into her North-Eastern accent much to her annoyance.

Holding herself tall, with excellent posture thanks to Deportment lessons from the time she was ten until she graduated Hogwarts. Her parents, while they might have been working class, dreamed big for their daughter and therefore gave her all the tools she needed to succeed when combined with her personality.

While she might dress down at home, often wearing slacks and comfortable tops whenever she is out she will be seen in a Muggle business suit and often paired with a pair of silk or light cotton robes over the top. While these days she wears her hair relatively short, it has varied in length over the years.

Millicent will often adorn herself with simple jewellery. In fact, at least ninety percent of the time it is the same watch, necklace and earrings day in and day out though she will change them around for certain situations.

Thanks to magic she doesn't have that many defining marks on her. The most obvious (not that people can actually see it) is a smallpox scar on her stomach that is three centimeters long. She also has a cesarean scar that runs along the bottom of it, the two forming an upside down "T".

PERSONALITY

LIKES: order, justice, honesty, oaths and vows, classical music, good wine, her daughters, peace, dancing and a good old Hollywood film
DISLIKES: liars, bribes, disaster, war, people who stick their noses into other people's business, reminders of the war
BOGGART: The results of another Purist/Muggleborn war

If someone was to describe Millicent the most likely words that would be used would be hard working, dedicate, determined and ambitious as well as intelligent. To the outside world she is just that. Growing up during the great depression and the second world war, Millicent's more informative years was spent in a household made up of her parents, herself, her grandparents and later on her two siblings. A household, that unfortunately quite often struggled to make ends meet. It was during this time that she found refuge in in books and was frequently found at the local public library. When she wasn't helping her grandmother around the house, she would consume books like they were air, reading just about anything that she could get her hands on. This thirst for knowledge has never truly left her and she is often found to be learning something new. During these early years though, Millicent was determined to use this knowledge to succeed, to be able to build a life for herself where she didn't have to shrimp and save wherever possible but could have exactly what she wanted.

She dreamed of success, of money and knowledge combining to open doors for her, of a life that wasn't possible for her as a child.

Even as an adult, Millicent always pushed herself to do her absolute best and then some. She craved power and respect but most of all she was terrified of not having something to her name. While, as she grew older she knew it wasn't possible, but she did have a dream of everyone having enough money to live, of there being no poverty in the world.

Despite this drive, need, to prove herself and do her absolute best Millicent does care deeply about a small handful of people who, surprisingly to some, come even before her career. As a child, before her death her Grandmother was the first person she truly loved and respected and later her sister, daughter and granddaughter joined this list. Millicent has always been closer to the females in her life, connecting to them easier than the males though it wasn't until she herself was an adult that she grew close to her mother. Though Martha was a housewife and therefore around a lot during Millicent's childhood, unlike her father who often worked double shifts, they never truly connected for some reason.

Even though she is a politician at heart and partially due to the events of the War, Millicent hates (she sometimes says this is an understatement) people who lie, betray others and try to bribe themselves out of situations. Her actions after the end of that war isn't something she's proud of and is constantly working to try and rectify these mistakes. A part of her wonders what would have happened if she was able to stand up for herself more, to stay firmer in her believes and not bow to political pressure to ensure that everyone was fairly tried and didn't worm themselves out of the fates that awaited them. Unfortunately she will never know. Given the general feeling of elation, she thinks is the only reason she managed to retain her political position as Minister for as long as she did...

This guilt is why she's trying so har to remain true to her values of truth, justice and order along with a level of transparency in all the work that she undertakes. That and looking back she knows that the corruption, lies and deciet were what led to the war lasting for as long as it did, or at least was one of the mitigating factors of it.

Due to this desire to do all that she can to prevent the Purists creating another war, Millicent has tried her hardest to be as approachable as possible to other members of the Ministry and any that might be interested in politics. She is more than happy to mentor them, give them advice and just generally listen to any problems that they might have though she might not always be able to fix them.

Millicent might come across as self controlled and poised in life and in someways she is just that but some of it is an act. Deep down, Millicent is terrified of her emotions. When she was younger she did allow people closer to her but after the events with Nicholas, she's tried to close herself off as much as possible. While she might not have been in love with him, she cared for him in her own way which was why she had agreed to at least date him a few times to see what happened. What he did though, scared her deeply emotionally and she has since then had trouble trusting. The only good thing to come from it is her daughter. Motherhood wasn't something she had ever expected and if it wasn't for her sister, her best friend she probably would have failed. Even today, with Cassandra fully grown with a family of her own she wonders just how she managed to raise a daughter and one so amazing at that. Nicholas might have hurt her the most in her life but Cass means the world to her and despite her insecurities and other failings - most notably her career and the devotion towards it - she always tries to be the best mother that she can.

Despite her couple of dates with Nicholas, Millicent has never truly seen anyone. There might have been a small handful of people (two girls and another guy) that she came close to falling in love with over the years but they were close friends of hers and combined with what Nicholas did, she never acted upon these feelings. Eleanor and possibly Cass are the only two who might be aware of it, she just couldn't bring herself to act on the feelings, barely even admitting them to herself.

While she might be a consumate professional at work, Millicent takes the time out to enjoy herself each day. To her there is nothing better than winding down with a glass of wine, a good book or an old Hollywood film from her childhood. That or spending time with her family.

FAMILY DYNAMICS: Millicent while she loves her parents and was devastated with her father's death she always felt that there was a bit of distance between them. She just felt that she couldn't connect with them as well as she would have liked. They were fine with being simple business people while she wanted to strive to be the absolute best. Despite that she would often visit them.

Out of her siblings she was the closest to Eleanor though they often butted heads as she thought Eleanor could take life more seriously. Roger was the most like her and perhaps that was why they were often at odds with one another, often arguing about various things but despite all of this she adored her siblings and they were the ones she went too when her marriage failed.

Nicholas. He is the man who's name is never mentioned nor is he talked about. If you do... Well you'll be lucky to live. That is perhaps the one sore spot in her past that she absolutely refuses to speak about.

She adores Cassandra and while she never thought she would be a mother, Cass means the world to her and she tried her hardest to be there for her while she was growing up. Isobel is another absolute joy in her life and she spoils her a bit too much at times.

~*~*~

When Millicent's parents found out that they were well going to be parents they only had themselves to be blamed. Martha had decided early on that she was going to marry Rupert, a man three years her senior but someone she adored. They'd known each other all of their lives so it only seemed natural to them. The two of them had first become lovers not long after Martha's seventeenth birthday but due to her final year at school, hadn't seen much of each other. Her eighteen birthday, the day she officially graduated changed things. Ten weeks later, she discovered she was pregnant.

Rupert, at the time was a junior in the Department of Control of Magical Creatures and was still living with his parents. This pregnancy forced them to marry quickly and have an 'early child' though there were always rumours that Millicent was conceived out of wedlock due to the haste of the wedding. As she was a small child, it seemed fate was on their side with the story that she was early.

Her childhood was hard at times, especially in the early years. The family didn't have much money and lived with Rupert's parents for the first four years, allowing his mother to assist with raising Millicent and teaching Martha how to be a house wife. During those years, Millicent already showed signs of wanting to succeed. She hated the fact that she didn't have enough money for the books she wanted, that they were relient on her grandparents and her father was never home due to the long hours that he worked. Not that she fully understood what was happening but she knew enough to declare that 'I want money and I want a happy family life one where we don't have to worry about how we'll get food on the table.' All of this wasn't helped by the fact that she was born during the depression and these more informative years took place during the war on Grindewald.

During her first seven years, she spent a lot of her spare time following around her grandmother, helping her with cooking when she could, though she was never that good at it, or in the library reading anything that she could. A lot of the books she couldn't understand but that just made her more determined. She was constantly consulting a dictionary to figure out what she was reading and by the time she would start Hogwarts she had read the majority of the theory for the seven years as well as a wide range of other topics too.

In general these first seven years of her life, she was rarely ill beyond a cold. Unfortunately when she was five she contracted smallpox and while she made a complete recovery and assisted with magic, she was only left with a small scar on her stomach though it has faded a lot over the years. This incident left her terrified and for quite some time afterwards she became obsessed with cleanliness though her parents eventually convinced her that she didn't need to go that far when it came to the prevention of germs and therefore illness.

When she was seven, her life changed again with the birth of her siblings Roger and Eleanor. She was confused at first and didn't really like them but after awhile her curiosity got the better of her. Millicent would spend hours sitting by their cribs reading to them from various books though they were far to young to understand what she was doing. As they grew, Millicent grew closer to her sister despite the age gap. Millicent adored her baby sister and the feeling was returned without any hesitancy. From that moment, Mill would do anything for her and El was the one person she allowed into her heart from the get go. She did love Roger but she just wasn't as close to him but even now she would protect him if the need arose.

Not long after her tenth birthday, Millicent convinced her parents (who were honestly more than happy to do so though money was short) to allow her to attend deportment lessons. She had sat down and worked out that if she wanted to be successful she had to act properly. This included being able to hold herself well. She was enrolled in them and undertook eight months worth of classes before the September that she was due to begin Hogwarts. While it was a lot of work, she enjoyed it and kept telling herself that it would be worthwhile in the end.

When she was eleven, despite her excitement of heading to Hogwarts she didn't want to leave her siblings and they didn't want her to go. Despite that, she went, the thirst for knowledge and the need for an education won out. It wasn't a surprise that she was sorted into Ravenclaw moments after the hat touched her head. It might have briefly considered Gryffindor for her ability to fight for the little people and Slytherin for her ambition to succeed but the former was far outweighted by her desire for knowledge which was connected to the ambition. At Hogwarts, she found that she suited Ravenclaw and was always near if not at the top of her year when it came to the academics. While she might not have been the most social of girls in her year she had a few friends but also made sure she was approachable by the younger years as she grew older if they ever needed assistance with anything.

It was therefore perhaps not all that surprising that she was made Prefect and later Head Girl much to her delight.

A year after graduating she watched her siblings ship off to Hogwart.

During her Hogwarts years, she had never dated nor been really that intersted in doing so. Or interested in sex either. She put it down to the desire she had to succeed and all the time she spent studying which resulted in her being less social than other people. Things dind't really change though after graduation. She did properly meet Nicholas, a Slytherin a couople of years older than herself who was working at a rare book shop that she ocassionally visited. From the get go, it was obvious that he was interested in her but she took awhile to warm up and never really did. She agreed to his dates, feeling that she should date not because she had any real interest in doing so. Plus Nicholas wasn't that bad, they had some stimulating conversations.

The two of them had been 'dating' for a couple of years when Millicent had finally convinced herself that she cared about him and in some ways she did though she had never fallen in love. There had been some talk of marriage between them though Millicent wasn't ready for that step Nicholas convinced her of doing so. Before that happened though, he got her drunk and took her to bed. The act left her feeling dirty and disappointed. She had hoped to wait for marriage, not that she had any real interest in sex to begin with.

Two days later, Millicent found a note saying that he had moved to the mainland and had no intention of marrying her. Once the shock had worn off, Millicent found that she was actually quite happy with the turn of events. She relaly hadn't been that happy in their relationship, never seeing him more than a friend and not even that close of a friend at that.

While her parents were initially upset, having wanted her to settle down, they quickly realised it was for the best. This seperation, while it caused a few whispers wasn't anything like what would come in a few months time. In the intervening weeks, before Millicent's life was turned upside down, Millicent dedicated herself so fully to her job that she initially thought that was why she was starting to feel sick. After graduating she had gained a position as a junior in the Department of Law Enforcement as a Wizengamont Aide, having always been fascinated with how the law worked. She had quickly made a name for herself as someone who put in a lot of work, was dedicated and hard working and in fact was expected to quickly climb the ranks to the Head of the DMLE.

It was six weeks after Nicholas left that Millicent began to suspect something was wrong. She didn't breathe a word to anyone about it until four months had passed though she had long ago confirmed her suspictions.

Their one night together had left her pregnant. She hadn't even realised that they hadn't used contraception.

It was a surprise therefore for her family and friends as well as her collegues when it became apparant that she was four, nearly five months into a pregnancy. For the following months, perhaps a year even after she had given birth to Cass - thankfully it was an easy pregnancy - she could feel the looks, hear the whispers of people about her. From the moment Cass was born, she meant the world to her. Even if she hadn't been planned or particularly wanted. Taking the next year off, with the help of her mother and sister, she started to do her best to raise Cass. Half way through 1956, Millicent returned to work part time at the Wizengamont Services. Despite that, by the time Cass was five, Millicent was working full time again. It was then that she was offered a promotion to the Undersecretary of the Wizengamont Services much to her delight.

Millicent had always thrived in this environment. She got to research things but also it required a level of attention to detail and hard work that she was always more than willing to put in as well as the desire and drive to go above and beyond what was expected of her. This new position brought her into contact with more people who took notice but also gave her more to do. Starting back fulltime work was made easier by the fact that she had enrolled Cass in a primary school so she could get the basics of her education underway as well as the assistance of Eleanor and their mother when Eleanor was at Hogwarts.

The next decade passed with Cass starting Hogwarts and Millicent eventually rose through the ranks to senior undersecretary of the DMLE much to her delight. Working under Elphinestone Urquhart was a joy and he constantly pushed her to do her absolute best and didn't discourage her from chasing her dream of one day becoming Minister, something he constantly told her she would be capable of.

When she wasn't working, Millicent tried to devote as much time as possible to her daughter and family. She would take Cass on adventures both in the Muggle and Magical worlds, constantly encouraging her to learn new things. It was perhaps a good thing then that her daughter had inherited her temperment and love of learning. Seeing her daughter off to Hogwarts in 1966 was a bittersweat moment. She was incredibly proud of her but wanted to keep her by her side.

The 60s were an interesting time for her. Due to her position as the senior undersecretary of the DMLE, she was involved heavily with the Squib rights movement that was sweeping the Wizarding World. While she was more involved with the administration of everything, Millicent found that while she couldn't publically take a stance she did privately agree with what they were fighting for. It took up a lot of her time and while Elphinstone also agreed with her they had to the toe the line on what was acceptable and what wasn't.

By the time the Squibs Right Marches had ended, Millicent had managed to impress people further with how effectively she handled herself and assisted Elphinstone during these events. Due to this she was offered the position of the Junior Undersecretary to the Minister of Magic. While she might have gone from Senior to Junior Undersecretary, the amount of work that she was responsible for increased and after talking to Elph she accepted the promotion. She stayed in it till 75 when she was given the position of Senior Undersecretary at the beginning of Harold Minchum's term as Minister. While she had liked working under Eugenia Jenkins, Millicent was surprised that she had stayed in for the full term of her Ministeraship.

The 1970s were even harder than the 60s. There was a rise in Blood Purism under, the Dark Lord though it only started off with small attacks at first. It wasn't long before that the fear sweapt through the Wizarding World and Millicent felt it along with everyone else. She tried her hardest to remain strong but by the time 1975 came around and the war was at it's height, Millicent knew that the fear was justified. They were losing and it was only going to get worse. Working so close to the Minster, she was aware just how bad the situation was. Death Eaters were everywhere, people could be alive one second and dead the next. No one was to be trusted and for a job that required a certain amount of trust... It was taxing. It didn't stop her from doing her absolute best though.

Harold, had a lot of potential in Millicent's eyes ut unfortunately it wasn't enough. She supported his hard line actions in more dementors at Azkaban and the work with Crouch Sr who had taken over the DMLE when her mentor, Elphinstone had reitred in 1971 towards the beginning of the war. They worked closely and developed a good working relationship as well as a strong friendship. At times, she wonders if that was all that kept her going along with her family. That wasn't to say that her family got away unscathed though. Her grandmother was killed in one of the early attacks of the war and her father was to be killed early in 1981 as retelliation of the actions she would take as Minister, something she still feels guilty about today though she knows deep down it wasn't her fault. The Dark Lord was targeting everyone, especially those who were in high up positions. The only good death during this time, in her opinion was that of Nicholas. He had returned to England in the mid 1960s to work as a Healer. While he had let her know he was back, she had nothing to do with him. As far as she knew neither did Cass though she is aware of who he is, Millicent did inform her of that believing she deserved to know the truth.

1980 was the year that her life took another drastic change. Harold who had been working tirelessly to try and win the war but was getting nowhere fast, was assassinated alongside his family. Due to it being in the middle of an Minsterial period, Millicent was raised temporarily to the position of Minister until an election could be held. She was nervous and elated at it. While she had dreamed of always becoming Minister she knew it was going to be a tough environment to do so as the war was getting ever worse as each day passed.

Millicent worked closely with the DMLE in order to try their hardest to end the war but it seemed that as soon as they made a step forward they would take 5 or 100 steps backwards. At least that is what it constantly felt like to her. Trust was a thing of the past though she and the other heads of departments, especially the DMLE was constantly fighting to get the public to trust them. It was no good though, she knew exactly how much of a mess the Ministry was in and it didn't help that she didn't trust them. Oh she trusted some of them - her immediate staff, Crouch and one or two others - but that group was incredibly small especially when one considered the size of the Ministry and what they were up against. It didn't help that she was aware of, at least periphially of the Order of the Phoenix who were operating illegally. As much as she wanted too they unfortunately didn't have the manpower to bring them into line and she suspected that some of her Aurors were members too though she had no proof.

By the time the end of her first year as Minister came around, she had started to dread coming into work. All there was, was bad news. At work, in the papers. There was very little good news that it was depressing. The only good thing that had happened was the marriage of her daughter about a month after she had been elevated to Minister.

1981 was even worse in many ways. She continued to work with Crouch to advance the 'kill over capture' route that they were encouraging with the controversial idea of allowing Aurors to use the unforgivables when up against the Death Eaters. In the end it was passed that they could use the killing curse but not the others. She just prayed that it would make headway in the war. Unfortunately, many Aurors seemed hesitant to use it, at least at first, not that she blamed them. It might have been a tough decision to make but it was the right one even if it was unpopular with the majority of people. Being Minister meant that the tough calls had to be made.

With the death of her father in January of that year, Millicent tried to distance herself from her remaining family though she didn't do that well at it. Most of her success actually came from the long hours that she was required to put in during this time.

Then October 31st occurred.

November 1st will forever remain imprinted upon her mind as one of the best days of her life and certainly the best of her term as Minister for Magic. The news that Voldemort was dead brought her to tears and it is perhaps the one time that she publically cried, sheer relief encompassing her entire body.

The war was finally over.

While she was devastated at Augusta's death. She had considered the lady a dear friend and respected her, she was too relieved for the war to be over to properly grieve for her friend and the others that she had lost during the war. That would come afterwards.

It was at the press conference later that day that she would state the line that she was most well known for "I assert our inalienable right to party" when the reports of the partying across the Wizarding World started to spill out into the Muggle one. She didn't blame them in the slightest. While she knew in normal circumstances the Oblivitators would be out in full force she had ordered a National Day Off for everyone (herself included apart from the one press conference she held) meaning that they were only responding to the serious breaches. In all, it was a day where despite the joy the Muggles nearly found out about the Magical world. The europha that everyone was feeling meant that she got away with it though.

The next day they sat down to deal with the aftermath of the war.

Millicent, working with the DMLE was determined to bring everyone to justice as quickly as possible with efficient trails for anyone caught and charged with being a Death Eater. Unfortunately it wasn't going to be the case with everyone. The entire Wizarding World wanted the trails done as quickly as possible so they could return to a life without fear.

The Death Eaters were rounded up quickly and were charged with life in Azkaban. Unfortunately a number of them claimed imperious as the cause of their actions and due to a) not having any proof either way and b) bribes to various Wizengamont members as well as some within the Ministry, they unfortunately got off. It left a bad taste in Millicent's mouth but there was unfortunately nothing that could be done about it.

Despite that the trails went well. The only hiccup was when Crouch's son was outed as a Death Eater in one of the trails. Unfortunately, due to this Senior's popularity fell and given his position Millicent was forced to ask him to transfer to another department.

By the middle of 1982, life had calmed down and while there was constant remainders of the war everywere people were moving on and starting families of their own. Cass was no exception to this and in late 1982 Millicent became a grandmother for the first time much to her delight. That year was also the year that the election was held in. The first after she was pushed up to the role of interim Minister, something that only normally lasts a few months but with the war it ended up being longer. February 28th, Millicent was offically elected Minister for Magic of Wizarding Britain much to her delight. There to her was a vast difference between the Minister she was before - out of necessity - and now, a properly elected one by the people of the Wizarding World.

Even though people were still terrified of Voldemort and what he represented to the Magical world, fearing to speak his name, Millicent announced that he was dead. It wasn't something she truly believed herself due to the lack of body but it wasn't until after the trails that she started to question how the events of the night were known. It wasn't something she would dwell on for long though, not wanting the reminder. It was in the past and that was where it would stay.

Despite the rough start to what would be her ten years in the office, the rest of her time in office passed relatively quietly, at least iin the eye of the public. The only real event that took place was the remaining Giants being driven into seclusion. She wouldn't complain. Despite that she worked closely with Margaret Thatcher, the Muggle Prime Minister during the time of her reign and they ended up developing a close friendship.

Despite assurances from some, come election time, that she would be fine she ended up losing to Fudge which was a major blow to her. She had never liked the other man, always thinking he was an idiot. Still, she would do her best.

After much discussion with the new Minister, she took up position as Head of the Department of International Magical Co-Operation as well as claiming her seat on the Wizengamont as a former Minster of Magic. While it wasn't Law Enforcement, Millicent found she quite enjoyed the work that she was doing. In the next couple of years she worked closely with Albus in order to revive the Triwizard Tournament, which she made sure to attend all three events and was estatic, to see Hogwarts win. Most of all she was glad that it had been a success. She hopes that they can do it again.

Other than that, she has been a guest lecturer at Hogwarts to discuss Politics and the Ministry with interested people as well as holding various workshops at times. She's travelled a lot as part of her job but most of all she is enjoying the time that she can spend with her growing family with her granddaughter now an adult she's realising just how quickly time is passing.
