PERSONALITY

If there is one word to describe Martha Rodgers it is flamboyant. She has always been out there personality wise and fashion sense. It's bright and something you would expect someone from the 70s to wear, which isn't all that surprising given her personality and what she likes. She is definitely out going, loves being around people and making conversation. You can't help but notice her in a room - her personality and clothes being the sort that you immediately notice. Martha despite her many flaws, is incredibly loyal to those who are her friends and family. She would do anything to see them happy in life as well as successful. Also being a romantic soul at heart, believing that you have one true love out there and if you find someone you love or attracted too you shouldn't hide it and jump on the opportunity. In this she will always try and set her son up with various girls though she knows that he loves Kate, she doesn't believe he should wait for her if she isn't showing any signs of reciprocating his feelings. One of Martha's more prominent traits is her determination to succeed - succeed at acting, at having her family succeed, at being happy, of setting up Castle and Beckett - it doesn't matter what it is that Martha want's to succeed at she is more than determined to do it. She's just determined to be the best person that she can be in all areas of life. Also despite living with her son and granddaughter, due to her ex-husband stealing all of her money she is determined to be her own person and not rely on her sons money, though he has more than enough to give her some. Even if this determination ends up with them being held up at the bank! One of her less desirable traits is her desire to know everything that is going on about her, including her family. She will use all of her connections to find out the information that she can about Alexis and Rick. She loves gossip and tries to weasel any information that she can out of people - which is seen by her knowing about Rick and Beckett's secret assignment without him telling because Beckett told Laney who told Alexis who told her grandmother. There's just no keeping secrets from her. Despite her love of gossip and ability to get information out from just about anyone, Martha is in fact extremely trustworthy and is more than capable of keeping a secret when she needs too. Not only can you trust her (most of the time) she trusts just about everyone too, find it hard to believe that people she knows and likes can do bad things though as Rick and Alexis have more contact with the NYPD she is starting to see the world for what it truly is. In some ways, Martha can be fairly gullible at times and believes in things that she is told even if it is fairly out there. Mostly, because she wants to believe the best in people - even if she does know that there are bad people out there. If she knows them how can they be bad after all... Of course this can contradict her realism at times, but that comes from her wanting her son to be normal and not to develop an ego and she has therefore taken up the habit of continually pointing out his shortcomings though she loves him dearly.

HISTORY

Born to Alexandra and Simon Rodgers, Martha was their only child and from a young age showed signs of being an actress. Her parents often took her to the movies and Broadway plays and she wanted to be just like those people. She would spend many hours in front of the mirror practicing her singing and acting and would put on one person performances for her family and friends. While young children would often stop dreaming of being famous one day, Martha never gave up on that dream and that was what drove her to go after a career in acting and to this extent, her parents gave in and paid for acting classes for her which she took too immediately and actually showed a lot of talent for someone her age. Martha was always an outgoing child and later teenager and adult, who loved being the center of attention and always had a lot of friends. Unlike some of the more popular girls at school she considered her friends true friends no matter how many of them she had. During high school, she dated a couple of boys including Chet though they would later reconnect late in life, the two of them becoming engaged right before he passed away. After leaving school, Martha started out in Broadway, acting on and off again including playing Titania in Midsummer's Night Dream in the 1980s. During her life she has also acted on television including on the Soap Temptation Lane. During this time, she ended up having a one night stand with a man who she never learned the name of though she ended up pregnant with Rick who she raised mostly by herself. That wasn't to say she never married - she did, at least once though that didn't end out well when he took off with all of her money leaving her to move in with her son and granddaughter, who he was raising by himself after he divorced his actress wife. While some might find it odd, it works well for the three of them who are really close and Martha does adore Alexis. Since she gave up acting, she has tried different careers, including become a life coach though that ended up not happening. After Alexis helped her set up a profile on MyFace, she reconnected with Chet and the two of them became engaged. Unfortunately he soon passed away, leaving her with a million dollars. Shocked and upset she finally decided to spend this money on setting up her own acting school, known as the Martha Rodgers School of Acting. Finally, it was something she enjoyed and was good at - despite the instance where the building flooded and she had to end up taking the classes in her son's house much to his annoyance. She did manage to get the money to fix it as a loan from the back, but unfortunately that didn't go smoothly as she and Rick ended up being held in a hostage situation. Thankfully, due to Rick's quick thinking they managed to get out unarmed and the pure luck that he was on the phone to Kate at the time.

"Well at least it's New York still," Martha said looking around her as she was lead from SHIELD Headquarters to Potts Tower, "even if it is a few years in the future. Still looks the same and the shopping has to be as great as ever. You said Rick, Alexis and Kate were here? Brilliant, I must see them and see what has been happening. Imaging just what they could have gotten up to when I wasn't around to keep things under control," she said with a shake of her head. Okay, Martha might not be directly involved and she did trust Kate and Alexis but it was Rick that was the problem - she loved her son but she knew the sort of trouble he could get into. She had been the one to bail him out of jail after all...
