Fandom: Star Trek Medium: Show Canon point: 2267 after the ep Shore Leave Arrival Date: Upon Acceptance PB: Personality: Bones is someone who comes off as gruff and uncaring at first glance is fast from it when you get down to it. In fact he appears so gruff and uncaring because he cares so much about his patients and it's his way of pretending that he doesn't. One of the reasons he actually went into medicine in the first place is that he loves helping people and doesn't enjoy seeing them in any sort of pain - even the people that he doesn't know. Of course the more he likes you the worse he'll threaten you, not that he usually means it. Perhaps it is what makes him such a good doctor along with the amount that he cares about all people but Bones is incredibly stubborn person. Once he's made up his mind its very hard to change it and he is also incredibly set in his ways. Despite growing up in the 23rd century and using their technology he has and always will prefer to undertake surgery with his own hands. Having grown up in the South of America, Bones is a true gentleman at heart and will treat a lady with the respect she deserves. He doesn't see people of their rank but their skill and will treat nurses as equals if they have the skills to show that they deserve to be treated so. A part of the reason that he pretends he doesn't care about people is because of the hurt that he experienced when his wife got divorced and took their daughter Johanna with her. While he might have kept in touch with her over the years it did tear him apart and he took to drinking before he made the decision to join Starfleet. He really doesn't want to experience something like that again. History: Leonard Horatio "Bones" McCoy was born Jan 20 2227 in Atlanta, Georgia. As an only child he grew up on the land that his family had lived in for generations. His father was a doctor and from a young age, Leonard was fascinated with his father's job and often insisted that whenever he had the chance that he would travel with his father to any jobs that he could. One of these was to Aberdeen where his father David diagnosed Montgomery Scott with indigestion. Leonard did well at school and always dreamed of becoming a medical doctor like his father, his hero in those early years of life. By the time he had finished school and was accepted into the University of Mississippi he was well known for his stubbornness, his determination, intelligence but most of all his desire to become a doctor like his father. At University he did really well and worked nearly all the time though he had a small group of friends. It was here that he would meet Trill Emony Dax who he had his first serious relationship. The two of them parted on good terms and remained friends over the years. Despite his serious personality, during medical school he and his friends would often play jokes on each other such as swapping drinking glasses for fake ones - none of the jokes went too far and always stayed quite funny. After graduating from Medical School he returned home to Atlanta and started to work with his own father for a few years while he saved enough money to open his own medical practice. It was during this time that he met Sophia who would go on to become his wife. The two of them had a daughter Joanna was born in 2249, who they both loved a lot and who would go on to study medicine much like her father. During the following years he would travel the universe helping other species including an inoculation program on planet Dramia II and in 2253 developed a surgical procedure allowing the grafting neural tissue to the cerebral cortex, followed by the creation of an axonal pathway between the tissue graft and the basal ganglia. Unfortunately not all would remain good between them. In 2264 his father contracted pyrrhoneuritis, which at the time was an incurable disease. Despite being in a lot of pain, Leonard at first didn't want to commit euthanasia on his father but in the end he was convinced. A few weeks later a cure was found for the disease and McCoy continually blamed himself for not making his father hold on longer. After his father's death Bones turned to drink and by a year had past his wife divorced him though the two of them would remain in contact due to Joanna. This was the kick that Bones needed to enroll in Starfleet. From there he served Starfleet in many locations including a short visit to Capella IV which was cut short due to their lack of interest in anything to do with medicine. By 2266 came around, McCoy was promoted to CMO of the flagship Enterprise to replace Dr Mike Piper. McCoy soon got the nickname Bones from Captain Kirk and found himself fitting in with the crew though he did find Jim exasperating at times they got on well. Unfortunately not all went well on their explorations of the new worlds. During one mission, Bones and the crew encountered a telepathic shape shifter that ate the salt content of it's prey. It took the form of Bones's ex-flame Nancy Carter in order to make him trust her. He only eventually managed to destroy the creature when Spock was assaulted and Jim's life hang in the balance. In early 2267, Bones and the rest of the Enterprise crew was on Shore Leave when he saw a giant white rabbit being followed by a young girl. It turned out that their thoughts were being processed and projected by an underground facility. In fact this wasn't the only example, when he was walking through a glade with Yeoman Barrows they encountered a dress of a Princess that she was thinking about. Encouraging her to try on the dress he started to romance her. Soon after a Black Knight appeared and Bones convinced it was an illusion didn't defends himself and ended up dying instantly by being impaled in the chest by the Knights Lance. Taken underground, McCoy was brought back to life and returned to the surface along with two Cabaret Girls he met on Rigel II once. Barrow was obviously jealous by this and he detached himself from their arms before taking her arm in his. Special abilities: Bone's most obvious skill is just how good a medical doctor that he is. From an early age he was fascinated by medicine and dreamed of becoming a doctor, something he worked towards for all of his life. In fact he can't imagine being anything else and there is a reason he is the CMO on the Starfleet Flagship. While this not be his main or best skill he was trained in hand to hand combat while attending Starfleet Academy. While he hates having to use it he is more than capable of holding his own in a decent fight but he could never fight for his life in some serious situation. He can also shoot a phaser which was standard Starfleet training but all in all he prefers not to fight unless he absolutely has too. One of the reasons he is such a good doctor is that he's highly intelligent and can think on his feet/under pressure. As a doctor, exploring Space he often has to come up with new techniques for saving people and cures for different illnesses that they might encounter. Another strength of his is his stubbornness and determination as well as his hatred of failure. As a doctor it means that he is most likely to loose the patient that he is working on and that is something he hates to see but also it reminds him of his failed marriage and that is something he continually dwells on thinking of 'what ifs' he could have done to save it. Despite that he isn't all that skilled at hand to hand combat and he hates causing people pain of any sorts. Another weakness as well as his strenght is the stubbornness as he doesn't know when to stop or say no to a situation which might end up leaving him in a very unwelcome situation.
